Platforms: iPhone/iPad (Universal), Linux, Mac, PC In particle physics, a boson (/ b o z n / / b o s n /) is a subatomic particle whose spin quantum number has an integer value (0,1,2. Price: $2-iPhone/iPad Free-Mac, PC, Linux Bosons form one of the two fundamental classes of subatomic particle, the other being fermions, which have odd half-integer spin (1 2, 3 2.).Every observed subatomic particle is either a boson or a fermion. When it comes to mad scientists, we only ever hear about the few bad eggs, like that Human Centipede guy who stitched some butts to some mouths. What about the crazy tinkerers who use their mad science for the benefit mankind? Take Fantastic Voyage, where some wacko government specialist figured out how to shrink people down to microscopic size. That’s crazy! Then he put it to good use in trying to take down those silly Russians during the Cold War. That’s mad science done right (although the Russians might have disagreed in this case). The scientist-cum-hero of Boson X takes a page right out of that Fantastic Voyage mad scientist’s academic journal. By shrinking himself down, our hero expedites the scientific method by going directly inside a supercollider in hopes of discovering a handful of theoretical particles. The experiments manifest themselves as grueling challenges of judgment and reflexes that resemble a Temple Run-style infinite runner crammed into the maddening conical mazes of Super Hexagon. All it takes to discover a particle is to fill a meter that tops off after you’ve run along enough blue platforms. boson, subatomic particle with integral spin (i.e., angular momentum in quantum-mechanical units of 0, 1, etc.) that is governed by the Bose-Einstein statistics (q.v.). The special platforms don’t show up all that often, and mistiming a jump or lane change ensures a quick death. Bosons include mesons (e.g., pions and kaons), nuclei of even mass number (e.g., helium-4), and the particles required to embody the fields of quantum field theory (e.g., photons and gluons). ![]() What’s more, later subatomic expeditions add platforms that move and assemble under your feet, or paths that blink in and out of existence. Overall, I was often frustrated with Boson X, but I also kept coming back to it.Boson X is the uncommon running game that makes survival a thrill instead of a chore. The all-important soundtrack is more consistent, and while it’s not up to Super Hexagon standards, it’s still pretty good. The visual design is either an eye-popping treat or astonishingly inconvenient for gameplay purposes it varies from moment to moment. Other things can’t be adjusted to, however, like the unbalanced procedural generation that doesn’t realize how much easier and harder certain obstacle patterns are. ![]() Said controls are rather unintuitive – holding left or right prolongs your jump just as holding up does, rather than shifting multiple lanes – but once you adjust, smoothly flying through a level is satisfying. That’s pretty much it, but the game makes the most of it, with wild, shifting levels that test every facet of the movement controls. The premise is that you’re a scientist running and jumping through a particle accelerator so stylized it’s unrecognizable as such. ![]() Boson X is like Temple Run with the physical layout of Tempest, but the geometric minimalism and twitch gameplay bring to mind Super Hexagon so much that if you liked that game, it’s practically guaranteed that you’ll like this one.
